March 5, 1959. The Golden Globe Awards were in full swing. Glamour everywhere. And there, backstage, stood two legends: Red Skelton, Hollywood’s court jester, and John Wayne, the Duke himself—larger than life and twice as loud.Red, ever the prankster, leaned toward John and whispered, “Hey Duke, if I win anything tonight, I’m sending you up to accept in a tutu.”
Without missing a beat, Wayne growled, “Only if you agree to do your next sketch on horseback—side saddle.”
Moments later, they were both presenting an award. Red pulled out the winner’s envelope, looked at it, and said, “And the Golden Globe goes to… someone who owes me five bucks!”
The crowd laughed, but Wayne snatched the envelope, opened it, and squinted. “Well, partner,” he said, “unless your name is Doris Day, you’re outta luck.”
Backstage, Doris took the Globe and told them, “You two should have your own awards—Best Comedy Duo in a Western.”
Red tipped an imaginary hat. Wayne actually tipped a real one. And Hollywood had one more legendary moment carved into its glittery history.
